May 2, 2004 -  Sight seeing: Nagarkot in the morning and and Bhaktapur Darbar Square in the afternoon..

A: Academic Program  (Days 1 – 5 in Kathmandu)

May 3, 2004 - DAY 1   Orientation and inauguration

8:30 – 10:00:  Introduction (political, social, economic and environmental issues of Nepal); Dos and don’ts by Dr. Sharad C. Karmacharya.

12:00 – 1:00:  Inauguration session.  ICIMOD’s role in the conservation of the Himalayan ecology and communities: Dr. Campbell, Director General, ICIMOD.

1:00 – 5:00:  Visit to ICIMOD demonstration site: agroforestry, horticulture, soil conservation, sericulture, community forestry at Godavari.  Mr. Suraj Thapa.  

May 4, 2004 - DAY 2   Start of the Academic Program

8:00        Walk in neighbourhood Bansbari

12:30     Visit Syayambhu Stupa (Buddha Jayanti - Birthday celebration of Buddha).

2:00        National Zoo.

5:00        Pasupatinath temple.

7:00        Boudhanath Buddist stupa (Buddha Jayanti - Birthday celebration of Buddha).

May 5, 2004 - DAY 3 Academic Programs

FIRST HALF

10:30 - 11:30    Regional Rangeland Program Phase II for Hindukush Himalayan by Dr. Yan Zhaoli

11:30 - 12:30    Beekeeping, Livelihoods and Community development in the mountain ecology.  Dr. Farooq, ICIMOD.

May 6, 2004 - DAY 4 Academic Program

May 8, 2004 – DAY 6

6:00        Presentation by Gyanendra Pradhan, Managing Director of Sangrila Energy on Hydro Power situation in Nepal.

May 9, 2004 - DAY 7

Transfer to the point of rafting.  Full day of rafting.  Full board. 

Overnight camp by the bank of Trisuli river.

May 10, 2004 - DAY 8

Half day of rafting.  Arrival at Royal Chitwan National Park.  Night stop at Machan wildlife resort.

May 11, 2004 - DAY 9

Full day jungle activities: elephant ride to view the wildlife, natural walk, canoe ride, bird watching, and elephant bathing.  Night stop at Machan wildlife resort.

May 12, 2004 - DAY 10

Full day jungle activities: elephant ride to view the wildlife, natural walk, canoe ride, dinner with ethnic Tharu dance.  Night stop at Machan wildlife resort.

May 13, 2004 - DAY 11

Arrival Pokhara.

Nepali folk dance and dinner. Night stop at Pokhara

May 14, 2004 - DAY 12

Visit to ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project Office).

Visit to Pokhara District Forest Office, Pokhara.

Talk on Community Forestry and Leasehold forestry in Nepal by  Dr. Jagadish Chandra Baral - Deputy Regional Director.

Nepali folk dance and dinner. Night stop at Pokhara

May 15, 2004 - DAY 13

Pokhara sightseeing.  Davis fall, Mahendra Cave, Bindabasine Temple

Preparation for Trekking.

May 16, 2004 - DAY 14

Drive to Phedi.

Start of Trekking from Phedi in the Annapurna Region.

Night stop at Pothana.

May 17, 2004 DAY 15

Trekking in the Annapurna Region.  Lunch at Landruk.

Night stop at Ghandruk.

May 18, 2004 - DAY 16

Trekking in the Annapurna.  Trek to Tadapani.  Night stop at Tadapani..

May 19, 2004 – DAY 17

Trek to Gorapani.  Night stop at Gorepani.

May 20, 2004 – DAY 18

Trek to Tikhedunga.  Night stop at Tikhedunga.  

May 21, 2004 – DAY 19

Trek to Nayapur and drive back to Pokhara.

May 22, 2004 - DAY 20

Visit Manakamana temple (cable car). Drive back to Kathmandu.

May 23, 2004 - DAY 21: Resume Academic Session

FIRST HALF

Visit Child Haven Orphanage run by Canadian NGO.  Briefing by Arjun mani Guragain and Kanya Gurung.

Health care system, Siddhartha Foundation and visit community hospital.  Briefing by Mr. Shyam Dhaubadel.

SECOND HALF

Free.  Shopping in Thamel.

May 24, 2004 - DAY 22

FIRST HALF

Visit Kathmandu Darbar Square, Hanumandhoka, Kasthamandup temple and old part of Kathmandu city

SECOND HALF

Free.  Shopping.

May 25, 2004 - DAY 23

FIRST HALF

Wrap up session:  Discussion of issues/key points; final question answer session; and recommendations.

Presentation by all participants on topic on Himalayan ecology, culture and experience

Award and Certificate to participants..

SECOND HALF

Afternoon free.

Evening:  Gala Dinner for everybody involved with the Program.   

May 26, 2004 - DAY 24

Trip ends.  Participants leave Kathmandu for return home to Canada.
